Welcome David
April 2024
We are thrilled to have David join the FIASCO team. Welcome!
David, a postdoctoral researcher at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Italy), brings his passion for understanding the intricate relationships between species and their environments. With a keen interest in combining genomic and ecological tools to answer evolutionary questions, David’s interest lies in the underlying genetic and ecological mechanisms shaping biodiversity.

seahorses in the anthropocene symposium
April 2024
It has been very nice to meet researchers committed to understanding biodiversity changes in the Anthropocene and share our insights on improving seahorses' assessment and management at the "Cambiamento della biodiversità nell’Antropocene: priorità per la Ricerca" symposium (details and talks' video here).

Welcome Roberto
March 2024
A warm welcome to Roberto on the FIASCO team!
He is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Ferrara (Italy). His research interests focus on studying the demographic and evolutionary processes affecting populations and species of conservation concern. He finds great excitement in the use of genetic and genomic approaches to reconstruct patterns at the population level and explore mechanisms related to local adaptation, life history evolution, and wildlife conservation.

Welcome beatrice
February 2024
The FIASCO team is growing! We are happy to welcome Beatrice.
She is a PhD student in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology at the University of Ferrara (Italy). She is investigating the potential accumulation of deleterious mutations in the genomes of individuals from small populations, with a focus on structural variants.

smbe23 symposium
July 2023
Having a great time in Ferrara at the diffused urban meeting of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (official webpage here), where we organised the Symposium “27 - Regulatory evolution and the emergence of diversity”. It has been lovely to meet old and new colleagues in such an inspiring atmosphere and location and we were touched by the great attention attracted by our speakers.

study on reference genes in octopus
May 2023
Getting octopus a solid set of reference genes to explore gene expression in these fascinating molluscs, check them here. Surprisingly, none of them were used as reference in previous transcriptional studies in cephalopods.

Presenting our efforts to inform seahorses' conservation at the I Conference of Conservation Biology for Early Career Researchers organised by the Society for Conservation Biology - Italy Chapter (see pictures here). So nice to see so many current and soon-to-be researchers devoted to preserving biodiversity among blossoms in Rome.

fieldwork in venice
February 2023
The disjoint L. saxatilis population in Venice (Italy) received a visit from an international team (Francesca, Ana, Luciano, and Diego supported remotely by Anja) to understand the mechanisms underlying range shifts and local adaptation to temperature and other stressors in the first confirmed alien species in the Mediterranean Sea.
This expedition was supported by the Research Council of Norway and Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn. We are very grateful to Stazione Idrobiologica Umberto D’Ancona and Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia for assisting during fieldwork.
